Brewing Mead with AMON AMARTH

Posted in Videos

When Sweden’s Amon Amarth came to NY on October 20, 2008, to play The Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza, we sat down for an in-depth question-and-answer interview with singer Johan Hegg, guitarist Johan Söderberg and bassist Ted Lundström at our New York headquarters.

After our work was over, it was time to lighten the mood. And how do you lighten the mood in a room full of Viking metallers? You break out some mead, that’s how. In the following video, watch as mead connoisseurs Hegg, Söderberg and Lundström demonstrate how to make their favorite brew out of everyday items such as empty water jugs, honey, raisins, oranges, yeast and balloons.

So, if you’re over the legal drinking limit where you live and have a hankering for some sweet, Viking alcohol, check out the video below.

First of all, they seem to be using some Fleischmann’s yeast or something similar, which is intended for baking. I would recommend finding a homebrewing store near you and picking up some champagne yeast. One packet is good for 5 gallons, produces around 12-15 percent a.b.v., and costs around a dollar.

As for the whole balloon trick thing, it works alright, but I would recommend buying an airlock at your local homebrew store… They aren’t that expensive, and they’re a lot more reliable, plus you can reuse them. That and they don’t blow up.

Another thing they didn’t show is that you need to make sure that your fermenter is sanitary before you start, or your mead will taste like dildos. You should also boil the water and honey to be certain that the water is sanitary, too. Just wait until the water cools to room temperature before you pitch the yeast.

Again, the techniques shown in this video DO in fact work pretty well, but if you want really good tasting mead, just add the steps I’ve mentioned here.

    Happy Home Brewing!

I just made up a batch. I added some Marachino cheeries to give it a blood like look.
I call it NORDIC JESUS’ VIKING BLOOD. The brand that we have here in my town is called CHAUCERS http://www.chaucerswine.com/mead.asp . It’s very good.
This viking shop site has some too. http://www.northworld-international.com/en/Honey_Mead_Viking_blood/c_WG95/a_92%20003
